Furnisher Duties and the Furnisher Rule

Furnishers must provide accurate data, correct and update it, give notice of disputes to CRAs, and respond to identity-theft information. The Furnisher Rule requires policies ensuring accuracy and integrity, including barring re-aging of delinquency dates.

  • Provide accurate information; do not report data known to be inaccurate or established as inaccurate after dispute.
  • Promptly correct and update previously reported information found incorrect or incomplete.
  • Notify CRAs of consumer disputes about accuracy or completeness.
  • Maintain procedures to respond to identity-theft information from CRAs.
No re-aging

The Furnisher Rule specifically forbids changing the date of first delinquency to a later date so a delinquency stays on the report past the time period allowed by the FCRA.
